Associate Professor
Julian Garcia Gallego is an Associate Professor in the Department of Data Science & AI , Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University. His research focuses on understanding how self-interested agents (humans and machines) coordinate actions without central planning, using game theory and simulations. Key areas include multiagent systems, social behavior dynamics, and AI. Education: Doctor of Philosophy in Economics / Game Theory, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Awarded 29 Jun 2011) Ingeniero de Sistemas y Computación, Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Awarded 2 Apr 2004) Teaching: Chief Examiner and Lecturer for courses including FIT1008/2085 (Computer Science), FIT1029 (Algorithmic Problem Solving), and FIT4012 (Computational Science). Research Projects: 2020-2021: A game-theoretic approach to mechanism design in WES (Facebook-funded) 2018-2022: Modeling collective behavior for social insect ecosystem services 2015-2016: Efficient computation of evolutionary dynamics in finite populations 2019-2024: Governing the knowledge commons Research Themes: Julian’s work spans evolutionary dynamics, multiagent systems, and applications in computational social science. His lab develops tools like pyevodyn for evolutionary simulations and contributes to agent-based modeling frameworks.
