Professor Xiao Lan Curdt-Christiansen holds a faculty position at the University of Bath's Department of Education. Her research focuses on language policy, multilingual education, and sociocultural aspects of literacy development, with particular attention to migrant communities and family language planning. She has held academic roles at institutions including the University of Reading, National Institute of Education (Singapore), and McGill University (Canada). Her work addresses macro-to-micro level policy interactions impacting language education, teacher pedagogical practices, and family language strategies. Current projects include an ESRC-funded study on multilingual practices in transnational families and collaborations analyzing Chinese international students' academic socialization in the UK. Key research areas include: Family Language Policy (FLP) frameworks Policy affordances/constraints for minority learners Language ideologies in education Transnational migration's linguistic impacts Recent publications examine heritage language development, EMI teacher challenges, and hidden curricula affecting rural migrant children. Her research contributes to UN SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) through policy-informed recommendations.
