Maria R. Baer, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Molecular Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She serves as Director of Hematologic Malignancies and Co-Leader of the Experimental Therapeutics Program at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. B.A., Harvard University M.D., Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Residency and Fellowship, Vanderbilt University Research Focus: Dr. Baer's research centers on drug resistance mechanisms and signal transduction in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with FLT3 internal tandem duplication (FLT3-ITD). Her work includes preclinical and clinical studies targeting FLT3 and Pim kinases, DNA damage responses, and oxidative stress in AML. Article Trends: Her publications highlight FLT3-ITD as a therapeutic target, explore kinase inhibition strategies, and address chromosomal abnormalities in relapsed AML. Key themes include drug resistance, combination therapies, and molecular pathways like STAT5 and Mcl-1 degradation. Stand Up to Cancer Epigenetics Dream Team Funded by National Cancer Institute, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and Department of Veterans Affairs Mentoring: Dr. Baer has a long track record of mentoring students, residents, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty in hematologic malignancies research. Labs & Teams: She leads a laboratory at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center, collaborating with the CALGB/Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology Leukemia Core Committees.
