Professor Chris Stokes is a leading glaciologist at the Department of Geography, Durham University , with expertise in ice sheet dynamics, climate-glacier interactions, and glacial geomorphology. His work spans both Earth and Martian glacial systems, integrating satellite remote sensing with fieldwork and numerical modelling . Education: Ph.D. (University of Sheffield), Lectureship (University of Reading) Research Focus: Ice stream behavior, supraglacial hydrology, East Antarctic sensitivity to warming, and historical deglaciation patterns His recent publications (2022-2025) highlight climate-driven glacier retreat , subglacial bedform genesis , and ice sheet-ocean interactions . Key findings include East Antarctica's vulnerability to 1.5°C warming and the role of alongshore winds in glacier slowdown. Scientific Awards: Philip Leverhulme Prize (2009) Gordon Warwick Medal (2013) Durham Doctoral Supervision Award (2016) Green Gown Award (2021) He has supervised over 20 PhD students and contributed to climate policy at UN COP meetings . His research is supported by £5M+ in grants from NERC and the Leverhulme Trust.
