Assistant Professor
Dr. Oliver Hailes is an Assistant Professor at the LSE Law School, specializing in international law, arbitration, energy, and environmental law. He joined LSE in January 2023 and serves as Assistant General Editor of the ICSID Reports since 2018. He holds a PhD in Law from the University of Cambridge, where his thesis explored customary international law in investment arbitration. His research focuses on the intersections of investment treaties, climate change, and energy law. Education: BA in Politics, University of Otago LLB (Hons), University of Otago LLM in International Law (First Class), Trinity College, University of Cambridge PhD in Law, University of Cambridge Research interests include investor-State arbitration, energy transitions, and the legal frameworks governing fossil fuel phase-outs. He teaches courses such as LL280 Advanced Issues in Public International Law , LL4BV Transnational Environmental Law , and LL4GD International Energy Law . Recent work addresses the valuation of compensation in climate-driven disputes, regulatory sovereignty during pandemics, and the role of historical precedents in economic law. He co-chairs a Masterclass on International Arbitration with Three Crowns LLP and advises on the Philip C Jessup Moot Court.
