Senior Lecturer
Dr. Carla McCabe is a Senior Lecturer in Sport & Exercise Biomechanics and Research Director for Sport and Exercise Sciences at Ulster University's School of Sport within the Faculty of Life & Health Sciences. With a distinguished academic career spanning over 15 years, she has established herself as an expert in aquatic biomechanics and human movement performance within water environments. Her professional journey includes significant positions at the University of Edinburgh (2011-2014) where she contributed to the formation of the Human Performance Science research group within the Institute of Sport, Physical Education and Health Science. Carla's educational background includes a BSc in Sports and Exercise Science (First Class Honours) from the University of Limerick (2003) and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (2008) investigating the effect of race pace on three-dimensional kinematics and linear kinetics within sprint and distance specialist swimmers. Her international research portfolio is evidenced through collaborations across numerous Sport Science and Biomechanics journals and she was awarded a visiting scholar grant to the Australian Institute of Sport in 2009. Her research interests focus on human movement performance within aquatic environments, with particular emphasis on swimming biomechanics, three-dimensional kinematic analysis, and the relationship between technique and performance. Recent work has expanded into gender studies in sports and concussion research in rugby league. Carla's publications demonstrate a consistent focus on methodological approaches to measuring swimming performance and understanding the biomechanical determinants of success in aquatic sports. Dr. McCabe has received multiple professional recognitions including the BASES BIG Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Award (2022), Best Poster Presentation (2024), and New Investigator Award: Third Place (2019). She holds Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (2022) and serves on several professional boards including the Advisory Editorial Board of the Journal of Sport Sciences and as a Board Member of the European Swimming Network. Her current research portfolio includes projects on sex differences in change-of-direction tasks, concussion mechanisms in rugby, and bridging the gap between swimming research and practical application for coaches. Dr. McCabe actively contributes to the sports science community through media engagement, including the BBC CrowdScience Podcast on aquatic locomotion and commentary on concussion management in sports.
