Associate Professor
Dr. Robin Mann is a Reader in Sociology (equivalent to Associate Professor) at Bangor University's School of History, Law and Social Sciences. He joined Bangor in 2009 after holding research positions at the University of Oxford (2006-2008) and University of Bristol (2004-2006). Mann holds a PhD in Sociology from Bangor, an MSc in Sociology (with distinction) from Bristol, and a BA in Social Sciences from University of East London. His research focuses on political sociology, specializing in national identity, nationalism, ethnicity, and class relations; civil society; and the politics of local social relations. He employs ethnographic and mixed-method approaches to understand identity and participation from the perspective of ordinary people. Mann serves as Co-Director of the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research (WISERD) and leads research themes on civil society. His recent publications examine COVID-19 vaccination behaviors, civil society organizations, social class impacts on mental health, and national identity politics. His work frequently engages with Welsh contexts while maintaining comparative international perspectives. He has secured funding from ESRC, Leverhulme Trust, and Welsh Government. As Postgraduate Research Lead for his school, he supervises PhD candidates including completed supervision of Stephanie Jones (2015-2020) on heritage railway volunteering.
