Senior Lecturer
Dr Camilla Hoyos is a Senior Lecturer and Research Leader in the Department of Health Sciences at Macquarie University, affiliated with the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research. She holds a National Heart Foundation Future Leader Fellowship within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences. Her research focuses on the impact of sleep disorders, metabolic dysfunction, and cognitive decline, particularly exploring therapies to mitigate risks of diabetes, heart disease, and dementia. Dr Hoyos completed her PhD in 2012 at the University of Sydney and Woolcock Institute, investigating sleep apnea’s effects on body fat and insulin resistance. She has over 20 years in clinical research, initially as a clinical trial coordinator and manager at the Woolcock Institute. Her current research emphasizes interventions targeting sleep disturbances to slow cognitive decline and prevent dementia. Key areas include circadian dysfunction in neurodegenerative disorders, melatonin supplementation, and digital sleep therapies. She leads projects such as the SIESTA initiative and the REShAPED trial, collaborating with institutions like the University of Sydney and Flinders University. Dr Hoyos has authored over 100 publications, with recent work covering CPAP therapy efficacy, cannabinoid-based sleep interventions, and light therapy effects. Her articles highlight trends in sleep apnea treatment, neurodegeneration prevention, and technological solutions for sleep disorders. Awards: James B.Skatrud New Investigator Award (2018) Advising & Grants: Leads multi-institutional projects on dementia prevention and sleep precision medicine. Current funding includes grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and industry partnerships.
