Associate Professor
Associate Professor Mohit Naresh Shivdasani is a prominent researcher in the field of medical bionics at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2022 after serving as a Senior Lecturer in Bionics since February 2018. Originally from India, he arrived in Australia to pursue his Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering at La Trobe University, Melbourne, and later completed his PhD in Auditory Neuroscience. Prior to joining UNSW, he worked as a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Bionics Institute (formerly Bionic Ear Institute) starting in 2009, where he played a major role in the $50M federally funded Bionic Vision Australia project. Dr. Shivdasani's research expertise spans neural prosthetics, electrical stimulation, and medical bionics with specific focus areas including retinal prostheses, cochlear implants, neuromodulation, and inflammatory bowel disease treatment through nerve stimulation. His pioneering work contributed significantly to the development of Australia's first bionic eye prototype, which was successfully implanted in three patients in 2012. His current research continues to focus on improving the resolution of bionic devices to enhance functional outcomes and quality of life for patients. Dr. Shivdasani has secured substantial research funding including multiple National Health and Medical Research Council grants, Australian Research Council grants, and international collaborative funding. His research has resulted in numerous publications including 82 journal articles, 5 book chapters, 11 conference papers, 18 conference abstracts, and 2 patents. 2022-2025: NHMRC Development Grant ($1.14M) - Retinal implant with closed-loop multichannel stimulation 2020-2022: NHMRC Ideas Grant ($732,693) - Ionic direct current for chronic pain treatment 2020-2022: ARC Discovery Project ($550,000) - Role of spike patterning in tactile perception 2014-2017: NHMRC New Investigator Project Grant ($359,501) - Improving spatial resolution in retinal prostheses Dr. Shivdasani has supervised 12 PhD students to completion (7 as primary or co-supervisor) and currently supervises 5 PhD candidates. He has received numerous awards including the prestigious 2006 Young Biomedical Engineer of the Year from Engineers Australia and was elected as a Senior Member of IEEE in 2016.
