Assistant Professor
Ismael Seáñez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU), joining the university in March 2021. He holds a PhD from Northwestern University (2016) and previously served as a Whitaker International Postdoctoral Fellow at EPFL in Switzerland and Head of the Translational Division at the NeuroRestore Defitech Center. His research focuses on developing neuro-rehabilitation tools and body-machine interfaces (BoMIs) to enhance mobility recovery for individuals with neurological disorders. The Seáñez Lab prioritizes improving assistive devices, neuroprosthetics control, and accessible rehabilitation therapies. Recent work includes advancements in spinal cord stimulation via neural decoding (2025) and cost-effective therapies (2023). He secured a Collaboration Initiation Grant in 2024 to foster interdisciplinary research. His academic trajectory includes leadership roles in translational neuroengineering and a commitment to bridging clinical and engineering innovation.
