Andrew J. Mannix is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University, appointed in 2020. His research group pioneers atomic-scale engineering of two-dimensional (2D) materials, with the overarching goal of tailoring electronic, optoelectronic, and quantum properties down to the fundamental limit of individual atoms. Education: Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Northwestern University (2017) B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (2012) Research Focus: The Mannix laboratory specializes in growth, fabrication, and characterization of 2D semiconductors, borophene, and van der Waals heterostructures. By combining scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, hyperspectral optical techniques, and machine learning, the group accelerates discovery and optimization of materials for next-generation high-performance transistors, flexible electronics, bio-integrated sensors, and quantum information platforms. A signature achievement is the development of robotic, ultra-high-vacuum stacking systems that deterministically assemble complex van der Waals solids with atomic precision. Ideal candidates possess backgrounds in materials science, physics, applied physics, engineering, or optics.
