Research Professor
Stanislas Dehaene is a leading cognitive neuroscientist and Research Professor at the INSERM-CEA Cognitive Neuroimaging Unit, based at the NeuroSpin center of CEA (Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives) in Gif-sur-Yvette, France. He leads a prominent research team focused on the neural mechanisms of cognition, particularly in the domains of number processing, reading, and consciousness. His research interests center on cognitive neuroscience and brain imaging , with a special focus on how the human brain processes numbers, language, and conscious perception. Using fMRI, EEG, and intracranial recordings, his work bridges experimental psychology, computational modeling, and clinical neurology. He has made foundational contributions to understanding the neural basis of mathematical ability and the global neuronal workspace theory of consciousness . Dehaene has received numerous prestigious honors, reflecting his impact on both science and public understanding: Atkinson Prize in Psychological and Cognitive Sciences (2024) Lewis Thomas Prize for Writing about Science (2025) Honorary Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) He leads the Unicog research team at NeuroSpin, a state-of-the-art neuroimaging facility dedicated to advancing human cognitive neuroscience through high-field MRI and innovative experimental paradigms. His work continues to influence both basic science and educational policy, particularly in the domain of mathematical learning.
