Professor
Gert Biesta is a Professor of Educational Theory and Pedagogy (part-time) at the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education and Sport, and a Professor of Public Education (part-time) at Maynooth University, Ireland. His work bridges educational theory, philosophy, and policy, emphasizing democracy’s role in education and the public purpose of schooling. He has held visiting roles at institutions worldwide and advises the Dutch government through the Onderwijsraad. Biesta’s research explores teaching’s artistry, curriculum design, and the critique of instrumentalist education. Education: PhD in Education (Leiden University, 1992) ‘Doctoraal Examen’ in Philosophy (Erasmus University Rotterdam, 1989) BA/MSc in Education (Leiden University, 1987) Multiple honorary doctorates from Nordic and Finnish universities Research Interests: Educational theory, democracy and citizenship education, world-centred pedagogy, teacher education reform, arts-based learning, and critiques of neo-liberal educational policies. Awards: AERA Outstanding Book Awards (2011, 2014), PESA Book Award (2020), Francqui Professorship (2010), and several honorary doctorates. Advisory Roles: Member of the Netherlands Education Council (since 2023), former member of the Scientific Curriculum Committee (2020–2022), and advisor to Verus (Catholic education organization). He edits British Educational Research Journal and co-edits book series on educational theory.
