Johanna Brewer is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Smith College and Director of Research at AnyKey, a nonprofit advocating for diversity and inclusion in gaming and live streaming. Holding a PhD in Informatics from the University of California, Irvine, and degrees from Boston University, Brewer’s work bridges technology design activism and critical research. Their research focuses on how marginalized communities challenge surveillance capitalism and create inclusive digital spaces. Brewer founded startups like frestyl (live music discovery), Rhomby (anti-surveillance smart homes), and Neta Snook (diversity-focused R&D). They lead the Inclusive Design Lab at Smith, emphasizing social impact through technology.
