Zvi Biener is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Cincinnati and holds affiliate appointments in the departments of History and Judaic Studies as well as the Center for Public Engagement with Science. He is Editor-in-Chief of the PhilSci-Archive and served as Vice-President (2021–2023) and President-Elect (2023–2025) of the International Society for the History of Philosophy of Science (HOPOS).

Research Interests:
Dr. Biener’s primary research lies in historical philosophy of science, with special attention to the works of Newton, Descartes, Hobbes, and Galileo. He investigates the interplay between metaphysics and empirical inquiry in the Scientific Revolution, focusing on concepts of space, time, matter, and laws of nature. Recently, he has also engaged in philosophy of data and artificial intelligence and conducted empirical studies on loneliness.
Publications Overview:
His recent articles explore participatory research values, Newton’s evolving geometrical definitions, the epistemic status of experimental evidence in Newton’s spatial metaphysics, and the certainty and modality of Newton’s laws. Together these works chart the methodological and metaphysical shifts in early modern natural philosophy and their resonance in contemporary science.
