Zoltán Illés

Zoltán Illés is an Associate Professor at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy at the Central European University (CEU). He previously served as Hungary's State Minister of Environmental Protection, Nature Conservation, and Water Management, and represented Hungary in Parliament for three terms, chairing the Committee on Sustainability and Environment. His policy experience includes roles at the European Economic and Social Committee, the World Bank, and the Hungarian Institute for Environmental Management. Dr. Illés has held academic positions at institutions such as Yale University (Post-Doctoral Associate), Gödöllõ University (Adjunct Professor), and the University of Horticulture and Food Industry in Budapest. He is a Fulbright Scholar and Humphrey Fellow, reflecting his commitment to international collaboration.

Dr. Illés' research focuses on environmental policy, sustainability, circular economy, and the integration of digitalization and AI into environmental science. His work bridges academia and policy, addressing challenges like renewable energy development in Hungary and industrial chemical regulation comparisons between the EU and the U.S. He has directed the Hungarian Environmental Management Training Centre and contributed to influential publications, including a chapter in Chemical Risk Governance.

His academic career includes teaching at institutions like Duke University and the University of North Carolina, emphasizing environmental management and policy.
