Zhuming Yao is an Assistant Professor of Chinese & Comparative Literature at Boston University's Department of Chinese & Comparative Literature. He holds a PhD from Princeton University (2023), an MA from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and a BA from East China Normal University. His research focuses on classical Chinese literature (tenth century BCE – third century CE), emphasizing textual criticism, poetics, hermeneutics, and literary history. He actively engages in comparative antiquity studies, bridging early Chinese texts with global literary traditions.
His current book project explores speech representation in early Chinese writings, redefining the relationship between orality and writing. Additional research interests include philological approaches to classical Chinese literature's historical reception and reinterpretation. He translates academic works into Chinese and English, with publications in journals like T’oung Pao, Wenxue pinglun, and Wen shi zhe, as well as books by Sanlian shudian and Nanjing daxue chubanshe.
