Zhen Zhang

Zhen Zhang is an Associate Professor of Chinese in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Union College, affiliated with the Asian Studies program. His office is located in Karp Hall 212. He holds a B.A. from Yantai University, an M.A. from Beijing University, another M.A. from Stony Brook University (SUNY), and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine.

His research focuses on Chinese language, literature, and film, examining intersections between cultural studies and the history of subjectivity. He explores themes such as human agency in consumer culture, China’s negotiations with socialist legacy, and globalization’s impact. Teaching emphasizes linguistic competency, cultural understanding, and critical thinking across all Chinese language levels. Courses include Modern Chinese Literature, Chinese Cinema, and East Asian literary traditions.
