Zenghai Lu

Zenghai Lu is the Director of Collaborative Provision in the School of Computing and Engineering at the University of Huddersfield, where he is affiliated with the Department of Engineering and the Centre for Precision Technologies. He holds a PhD in Photonics Engineering from Cranfield University and has previously served as a Senior Lecturer at Birmingham City University and a Lecturer at Teesside University. He was also a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Sheffield.

His research focuses on optical coherence tomography (OCT), polarization-sensitive OCT, dual-mode OCT/fluorescence imaging, and smartphone-based imaging. His work spans biomedical engineering, materials characterization, and industrial monitoring applications. He is actively involved in advancing low-cost OCT for use in additive manufacturing and healthcare diagnostics.

The recent publications highlight a strong trend in OCT-based biomedical and materials analysis, with applications in blood coagulation, skin biomechanics, and optical system design. His work increasingly integrates imaging with industrial and educational applications, demonstrating interdisciplinary impact.

Notable scientific recognition includes the 3M BIC Fellowship (2024–2025) for in-situ monitoring of additive manufacturing processes using low-cost OCT.

He is currently supervising PhD student Xinman He on applications of low-cost OCT. He has secured external research funding as Principal Investigator and has contributed to educational simulation validation in radiography. His peer-review activities include service for journals such as Optics Express, Applied Optics, Photonics Research, and Journal of Healthcare Engineering.

Dr. Lu is affiliated with the Centre for Precision Technologies and leads research in optical imaging systems, contributing to both academic and industrial advancements in precision engineering and healthcare technology.
