Zane Perkins is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Trauma Science at the Blizard Institute and an Academic Fellow at the Digital Environment Research Institute (DERI) at Queen Mary University of London. He is a Consultant Trauma & General (Upper Gastrointestinal) Surgeon at the Royal London Hospital and a Consultant in Prehospital Care with London’s Air Ambulance. His clinical expertise spans trauma systems in South Africa and the UK, with a focus on Bayesian Network-powered predictive analytics for clinical decision-making in trauma care, prehospital resuscitation, and acute kidney injury in trauma patients.
Perkins earned his medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and completed UK higher surgical training in the Kent, Surrey, and Sussex Deanery, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. His research bridges trauma surgery and artificial intelligence, evidenced by his 2016 PhD on predictive analytics in trauma care and publications in leading journals like Nature Medicine and PLoS One. His work addresses critical gaps in prehospital interventions, limb salvage prognosis, and resource allocation during mass casualty events.
