Zakia Salime

Zakia Salime is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2005). Her research focuses on intersections of gender, globalization, and postcolonial theory, with a regional specialization in Morocco and North Africa.

Research Interests:

• Examining global-local dynamics of human rights frameworks and Islamic legal systems
• Gendered spatial politics during Arab Spring uprisings
• Neoliberal land governance and peasant resistance in Morocco
• Sociolegal analysis of citizenship and resource privatization

Current Projects: Her upcoming book manuscript, Seeing like a Woman: Land and Extractive Governance in Morocco, centers rural women's perspectives in land privatization struggles. This ethnographic work explores legal barriers to land access, economic transformations, and grassroots resistance movements.
