About
Yuri Kivshar is Professor and Head of the Nonlinear Physics Centre within the Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering at the Australian National University (ANU), Australia. Since 1993 he has led internationally recognised research programmes in nonlinear optics and metamaterials.
Education
- PhD, USSR Academy of Sciences (1984)
Research Interests
Professor Kivshar has pioneered theoretical and applied investigations in nonlinear optics, with particular emphasis on optical solitons and vortices, metamaterials, and nonlinear photonic crystals. His work has elucidated fundamental phenomena such as self-focusing, nonlinear instabilities, and nonlinear wave propagation in non-integrable systems, and has opened avenues for optical data processing and optical communications.
Scientific Awards & Honours
- Peter Baum Award, Australian National University
- Carl Zeiss Visiting Professor Award, University of Jena & Carl Zeiss Foundation
- Distinguished Award, Wenner-Gren Foundation, Sweden
- Distinguished Professor, Australian National University (2010)
Publications & Impact
Author or co-author of over 800 publications and books, Professor Kivshar holds an h-index of 72 as of January 2014, reflecting his exceptional influence on the fields of nonlinear optics and photonics.
