Dr. Yuiko Asaba is a Lecturer in Music at SOAS University of London, affiliated with the School of Arts and Department of Music. She holds a PhD in Music from Royal Holloway, University of London (2017). Her research focuses on Latin American popular musics, particularly Argentine tango, and their global circulations in the Asia-Pacific region. Her first book, Tango in Japan: Cosmopolitanism Beyond the West (University of Hawai‘i Press, 2025), examines Japan-Argentina musical connections from the 1910s to the present. She co-leads two EU-funded projects: 'Resonating Across Oceanic Currents' and 'Asia-Latin America: Decentering Global Music History.' Dr. Asaba serves on the editorial board of Yearbook for Traditional Music and has held roles such as Board Secretary of the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM).
Her awards include the American Musicological Society Subvention for Publication (2024). She has performed professionally with the National Orchestra of Argentine Music Juan de Dios Filiberto and Tango Orchestra Astrorico. Her expertise spans ethnomusicology, global music histories, and performance theory, with publications in Ethnomusicology Forum, East Asian Journal of Popular Culture, and the Cambridge Companion to Tango.
