Yuhong Fu

Dr. Yuhong Fu is a Senior Research Fellow at the School of Medical Sciences, The University of Sydney, and a member of the Brain and Mind Centre. With a background in neurology and neuroscience, Fu's research focuses on glial involvement in neurodegeneration, particularly in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and related synucleinopathies.

• Education: MD (1996), PhD in Neuroscience (2002) on experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

Research Interests include:

• Glia in neurodegenerative diseases
• Alpha-synuclein pathology
• Lipid metabolism in PD and MSA
• Neuroanatomy and neuropathology
• Adult neurogenesis and neurorestoration

Key Publications highlight astroglial protein profiles, lipid dysregulation, and glial-neuronal interactions in synucleinopathies. Recent work explores proximity ligation assays for early alpha-synuclein detection and sex-specific lipid changes in Abca7 knockout models.

Scientific Awards:

• IDSA Foundation grant (2025) for bacterial traces in Alzheimer’s brains
• Michael J Fox Foundation support (2019) for glial protein studies in PD
• NHMRC grants (2018, 2017) for imaging platforms and mitophagy research

Teaching & Supervision focuses on neuroanatomy and neurodegeneration. Current research students include Zirui Cao (Postmortem PD neural activity), Yang Liu (PD-associated genes pathobiology), and Zirui Zeng (Sleep neuron neuropathology in PD).

Labs & Collaborations: Fu has worked with Neuroscience Research Australia (Paxinos’ and Halliday’s labs) and employs histology, microscopy, animal models, and molecular biology to study neurodegenerative mechanisms.
