Yu-Hui Huang

Yu-Hui Huang serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois Chicago's Graduate Biomedical Visualization Program while working as a radiologist at both the University of Minnesota Medical Center and Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis. Her career uniquely bridges the arts and sciences, reflecting her undergraduate double major in art and biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Huang earned her bachelor's degree from UAB in 2009, followed by an M.S. in Biomedical Visualization from UIC in 2013 and an M.D. from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 2019. Her educational journey demonstrates a sustained commitment to integrating artistic and scientific disciplines.

Huang's professional work focuses on medical illustration and biomedical visualization, where she creates detailed anatomical illustrations for textbooks and medical journals. She applies her artistic skills clinically through designing 3D printed models that assist with surgical procedures, such as the 3D printed model of a dog's skull and tumor she created for veterinary surgery. Her approach demonstrates how artistic visualization enhances medical understanding and clinical outcomes.

Motivated by the mentorship she received during her education, Huang began teaching in 2022 to 'give back' to the field. She credits professors like Doug Baulos (associate professor of drawing and bookmaking) and Gary Chapman (professor emeritus of painting) at UAB for developing her artistic capabilities, and Leslie Hendon for providing her first opportunity to illustrate an anatomy lab manual.
