Yu-Chiao Lu

Yu-Chiao Lu is a Researcher at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), KTH Royal Institute of Technology, within the Unit of Processes. Their research focuses on sustainable transitions in the iron and steel industry, including low-CO₂ steel production, utilization of biomass residues, and industrial symbiosis for waste valorization. They hold a PhD and Master’s degree in Materials Science from KTH and a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hong Kong.

Key research projects include leading the EU RFCS BioReSteel project (2023–2027) to develop green fertilizers and fossil fuel alternatives in steelmaking, and Vinnova-funded projects on sustainable fluxing agents and refractory wear mechanisms in the AOD process. Lu’s technical expertise spans high-temperature experiments, furnace design, thermodynamic modeling, and software tools like COMSOL Multiphysics.

Research interests emphasize decarbonization of industrial processes, material lifecycle analysis, and bridging gaps between academic research and industrial applications. Their work aims to advance environmentally friendly materials and processes in metallurgy while fostering cross-sector collaboration through industrial symbiosis.
