About
Yoseob Yoon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University, affiliated with the Department of Physics and a Core Faculty member at the Quantum Materials and Sensing Institute (QMSI). His research focuses on optoelectronic and mechanical properties of quantum materials, van der Waals heterostructures, and ultrafast spectroscopy techniques. He holds a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from MIT (2019) and a B.S. in Chemistry from POSTECH (2012).
Research interests include engineering light-matter interactions, THz-induced phenomena, and coherent control of material properties. His lab, the Ultrafast Laboratory, employs advanced spectroscopic methods to study quasiparticle dynamics and device applications in quantum materials. Recent milestones include a 2024 Nature publication on THz phonon engineering and setup of cutting-edge optical systems for THz spectroscopy.
Lab infrastructure includes cryostats, pulsed THz setups, and van der Waals stacking stations. Collaborations with institutes like Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and University of California, Berkeley, highlight interdisciplinary work in quantum science. Current lab activities focus on enabling optoelectronic and quantum photonic devices through tailored material interactions.
