About
Yoichiro Tanaka is a specially appointed Professor and Special Advisor at Tohoku University. He holds a Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering from Tohoku University, where his thesis focused on perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) physics and storage system integrations. With over 30 years of experience in academia and Toshiba's storage device business, he pioneered PMR technology, enabling the world’s first PMR hard disk drive in 2005. His work spans giant magnetoresistive heads, perpendicular granular thin film media, and computational storage systems integrating big-data analytics.
Research Interests: Dr. Tanaka’s research centers on magnetism and magnetics technology, particularly perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) and its applications in data storage. His expertise extends to magnetic media design, storage system integration, and computational devices for advanced data processing.
Scientific Awards:
- Nikkei BP Technology Award (1997, 2006)
- Japan Magnetics Society Achievement Award (2006)
- Okochi Memorial Prize (2007)
- IEEE Fellow (2024)
Professional Affiliations: Dr. Tanaka serves as a member of the IEEE Magnetics Society Administrative Committee (2022–2024) and as a Fellow of the Magnetics Society of Japan. He was Secretary General for the International Magnetics Conference (Intermag 2023, Sendai) and a Magnetics Society Distinguished Lecturer (2023).
