Yaron Klein is an Associate Professor of Arabic and the Chair of Middle Eastern Languages at Carleton College. He also serves as the Director of Middle East Studies and teaches oud (the "Arab Lute") in the Music Department. Since joining Carleton in 2009, he has directed Middle Eastern Music chamber groups and contributed to interdisciplinary research at the intersection of literature and music.
- Education: PhD and MA from Harvard University.
His research explores the discourse on music in premodern Islamic and philosophical writings, including works by al-Fārābī and al-Ghazālī, as well as ʿAbbāsid court poetry. Recent publications, such as his 2023 article in Oriens, focus on the historical and cultural contexts of musical instruments in Islamic traditions.
He teaches Arabic language courses (elementary to advanced) and courses on Classical Arabic literature, contemporary Arab music, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, alongside offering oud instruction at both juried and non-juried levels across multiple semesters.
