About
Yann Rocher is a Lecturer at École nationale supérieure d'architecture Paris-Malaquais (ENSAPM) within the Art, Architecture, Politics department. He has held this position since 2009, after beginning his teaching career in 2005. He also teaches at Paris-Belleville School of Architecture and ENSA Nantes [Mauritius] since 2019.
His research interests span architectural utopia, exhibition scenography, architectural narration and modeling, acoustics and spatial design, theatrical architecture, and wood construction techniques. His teaching philosophy emphasizes generalist architectural education with specific axes including systematic reference use, art and scenography as reflection sources, metaphorical space interpretation, radicality and utopia as reality critique, idea materialization through fabrication, and spatialized project mediation.
Rocher's work shows a consistent pattern of interdisciplinary exploration, moving between architecture, theater, music, and astronomy. His recent projects include 'Dyademe' (a geodesic greenhouse at Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans), 'Théâtres en utopie' exhibition, and 'Globes. Architecture and sciences explore the world' at Cité de l'architecture in Paris. He is currently researching transparency in architecture, wooden theaters' cultural history, and artists working with optical boxes.
As co-director of the inter-school course 'L'entour' on exhibition scenography since 2018, he has facilitated over 80 public conferences with scenographers, curators, and architects, creating partnerships with major cultural institutions including the Louvre Museum and Centre Pompidou. His work has been published by Actes Sud and Norma.
Rocher's academic background includes a DPLG Architect diploma, Master of Musicology from EHESS, and DFS in Musical Acoustics from the National Conservatory of Music and Dance of Paris. His early career involved working with acoustician Yaying Xu and architects Xavier Fabre and Philippe Pumain on stage venues from 1998-2008, followed by leading the Théâtre électronique collective for sound installations from 2002-2011.
