Yan Zhang

Yan Zhang is an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, affiliated with the School of Molecular & Cellular Biology and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. He joined in November 2023 from the University of California, San Francisco, where he conducted postdoctoral research from 2014 to 2023. His research focuses on microbial physiology and RNA biology, particularly bacterial stress responses and mRNA structural dynamics. Zhang pioneered studies on cold shock adaptation mechanisms and translation initiation regulation, leveraging interdisciplinary approaches to unravel gene expression control.
