Yael Gerson is the Deputy Head of Programme for the BA Education and a Lecturer in Sociology and Education at the Department of Educational Studies, Goldsmiths, University of London. She holds a PhD in Sociology (2013) and MA in Communication, Culture & Society (2003) from Goldsmiths, alongside a Licenciatura en Comunicación from Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City.
Her research focuses on gender and digital cultures, particularly in Latin American contexts, emphasizing indigenous and activist communities. She employs ethnographic and digital methodologies to explore how digital communication reshapes communities and social life, with a critical engagement in feminist research, social inequalities, and decolonising methodologies. Current projects include the Wellcome Trust-funded 'People Like You' and freelance consultancy work on digital cultures, including Smart Lives, Wearables, and Cybersecurity.
Yael is affiliated with the Society for Latin American Studies (SLAS) and the Latin American Studies Association (LASA). Her prior research included a BA/Leverhulme grant-funded project with Zapatista communities in Mexico and the USA, examining indigenous feminism with indigenous women in Chiapas.
Teaching responsibilities include modules on Culture & Identity, Research Methods, Dissertation in BA Education, Culture & Society, and the MA module on Masculinities and Femininities in Education.
