Xin Yang serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Macalester College, specializing in modern Chinese literature, film, and digital culture. Her research explores gender politics, Internet studies, and the socio-cultural impact of new media in contemporary China.
She holds a B.A. from Beijing Foreign Studies University and a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. Her academic journey has led to significant contributions in the field of Chinese cultural studies.
Professor Yang's research focuses on the intersection of literature, gender, and digital media in post-socialist China. She investigates how Chinese female writers navigate post-feminist discourses and how digital technologies reshape literary production and community formation. Her work also addresses migrant workers' cultural expressions and the social implications of Chinese science fiction.
Her recent publications include a 2024 article on migrant workers' poetry and a forthcoming 2026 piece on science fiction. These works reflect her broader interest in how literature and media mediate social conflicts and identities in contemporary China.
At Macalester, she teaches diverse courses such as China on Screen, Gender and Sexuality in China, and Cyber China, fostering student engagement with Chinese language and culture at all levels.
