Xi Zhang

Xi Zhang is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art History at Scripps College. Their research focuses on Modern Chinese art/architecture, East Asian interregional art history, and diasporic visual culture. They hold a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Chicago, an M.A. from the University of Louisville, and a B.A. in French from Sichuan International Studies University.

Research interests emphasize spatial practices and visual culture in transcultural contexts from the 18th–20th centuries, including urban studies of Shanghai and architectural analysis of cultural institutions. Recent work examines 1930s Shanghai’s architectural exhibitions and dance halls as sites of modernity.

Awards include the Mellon COSI Advanced Writing Fellowship (2020–21), Kei-on Chan Dissertation Prize (2020–21), and multiple fellowships from the University of Chicago and Art Institute of Chicago. Courses taught include The Arts of China, Asian Art Topics, and Japanese Prints.
