Xavier Granell

Xavier Granell is a Researcher at the Department of History at the European University Institute. A Spanish national, he joined the EUI in 2023 as part of Cohort 2023.

His research focuses on Spanish history, particularly Republican Politics and Federalism during the 19th century. His doctoral thesis examines Empire in Revolution. Republican Politics in Global Spain (1868-1878) under the supervision of Lucy Riall, with Carlotta Sorba as second reader. He is actively involved in the Mobilities in History research project.

Granell's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on transnational democracy, federalism, and revolutionary movements in 19th century Spain, with particular attention to figures like Francesc Pi i Margall and political events such as the Cantonal Revolution and the First Spanish Republic in Valencia.

His work spans multiple languages including Catalan, Spanish, and likely English, reflecting the transnational nature of his research on Southern European republicanism.
