About
Prof. Wouter Peters holds dual professorships at the University of Groningen (Honorary Professor in Atmospheric Composition Modeling since 2025) and Wageningen University (Carbon Cycle Professor since 2015). His research focuses on global carbon cycle dynamics, climate modeling, and greenhouse gas monitoring. He leads interdisciplinary teams investigating emissions, climate variability, and energy transition challenges.
Education: PhD in Meteorology (Utrecht University, 2002), MSc in Meteorology & Physical Oceanography (1998), BSc in Physics (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, 1994).
Research interests include atmospheric composition modeling, methane emissions tracking, wildfire impacts on CO₂ uptake, and integration of observational data with climate models. Key contributions include the CarbonTracker system and leadership in the Global Carbon Project.
Recipient of major grants (NWO VIDI, ERC Consolidator) and advisor to Dutch climate policy initiatives. Leads national and international consortia on climate science infrastructure (e.g., Ruisdael Infrastructure, ICOS Carbon Portal).
Advocates for science communication and mentors early-career climate scientists through TransCom community programs.
