Wonjung Bae

Wonjung Bae is a Lecturer in the Program in Film and Media Studies at Johns Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. Her affiliation includes office location at Film Centre - Suite 204. Bae holds an MFA in Film and Video from Columbia College Chicago, an undergraduate degree in political science from Korea University, and interned at PBS Frontline/WGBH Boston. She has extensive professional experience as a documentary filmmaker, BBC Seoul Producer, and founder of an international co-production film company.

Her research focuses on impact storytelling, realism, direct cinema techniques, and cross-border collaborative productions. Notable projects include Dollar Heroes (screened at European Parliament/UN) and investigative reports like the Gangnam sex scandal coverage (Asian Academy Creative Award winner). Awards span prestigious film accolades including Student Academy Awards and Grierson nominations.

Before academia, Bae produced socially engaged documentaries addressing Korean reunification issues, gender violence, and pandemic challenges. She has collaborated with Emmy-winning producer Tod Lending and Kartemquin Films. Bae’s career bridges journalism (BBC) and artistic filmmaking, advocating for underrepresented narratives through character-driven stories.
