Wolfgang Hein

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Hein is an Associate at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in Hamburg, specializing in Global Health Governance, Environmental Policy, and Globalization Dynamics. He holds a Doctorate in Political Science (Dr. rer. soc.) from the University of Constance and a Habilitation from the University of Hamburg. His career includes roles as a Visiting Professor at the Universidad Nacional in Costa Rica and editor of the GIGA Journal Family. He currently leads GIGA's participation in the Leibniz Research Alliance 'INFECTIONS’21', focusing on antimicrobial resistance governance.

His research emphasizes global governance challenges in health, environment, and development, particularly in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa. He has published extensively on topics such as TRIPS Agreement implications for medicine access, renewable energy policy in the Global South, and pandemic response mechanisms. Recent work analyzes AMR national action plans, globalization's socio-economic impacts, and global health equity frameworks. Active in policy advising, he contributes to projects like 'INFECTIONS in an Urbanizing World' addressing zoonotic diseases and AMR spread.

Key achievements include co-authoring the 2023 book Globalization: Prerequisites, Effects, Resistances and leading content analyses of 114 countries' AMR governance strategies. His interdisciplinary approach bridges political science, public health, and environmental studies, with frequent media engagements on vaccine inequity and pandemic preparedness.
