About
Winston Anderson is a Professor of Biomedical Science at Howard University, where he served as Chair of the Department of Zoology from 1975–1983. He holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from Brown University (1966) and has conducted seminal research on spermatology, mitochondrial DNA, and embryology. His career includes post-doctoral work in Paris and teaching roles at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.
- Education:
- B.S. and M.S. in Zoology, Howard University (1962–1963)
- Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences, Brown University (1966)
- Research Interests: Sperm structure/function, mitochondrial dynamics in reproduction, embryonic development mechanisms, and glycolytic energy pathways in cells. His work on sea urchin sperm mitochondrial DNA integration into embryos challenged conventional understanding of paternal mitochondrial contributions.
Awards & Recognition:
- First African American on the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) Council
- Recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Mentoring (2011)
Mentoring & Initiatives: Founded Howard University's Howard Hughes Medical Research Scholars program (2006) and co-founded the Sandy Spring Museum and African Art Gallery (1988). Secured major grants from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, NSF, and NIH to support minority students in STEM.
Professional Networks: Co-founder of the International Society for Spermatology (1966), collaborating with global scientists like Don Fawcett and John Andre. Pioneered techniques for glycogen detection in sperm cells.
