William Tow is a Professor in the Department of International Relations at the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, Australian National University (ANU). He previously held roles at the University of Queensland, Griffith University, and the University of Southern California (USC), including Assistant Professor of International Relations. He has been a Visiting Fellow at Stanford University and a Visiting Research Associate at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London. His research focuses on alliance politics, US security policy in the Asia-Pacific, and Australian security policies.
Education: BA from Redlands College, MA and PhD from the University of Southern California.
Research interests include the evolution of security frameworks in the Asia-Pacific, the persistence of the San Francisco System, and the role of minilateralism in regional security. He has authored over 100 publications, including articles and book chapters analyzing strategic dynamics and alliances.
Awards: Recipient of the 2001 Australian Award for University Teaching in the Social Sciences.
Professional roles: Co-director of ANU projects for the MacArthur Foundation's Asia Security Initiative (2008–), Editor of the Australian Journal of International Affairs (2001–2006), and member of the Foreign Affairs Council (Australian DFAT, 1998–2003).
Key projects include the ANU-Thammasat Collaboration (2019–2022) and research on ROK-US alliances and pivotal powers in Asia.
