William P. Barnett

William P. Barnett is the Thomas M. Siebel Professor of Business Leadership, Strategy, and Organisations at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. He serves as Chair of the Department of Environmental Social Sciences, Faculty Director of the Stanford Initiative on Business and Environmental Sustainability, Faculty Director of the Stanford Executive Program, and Senior Fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute on the Environment.

His educational background includes a BA and PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, with doctoral specialization in Business Administration.

Barnett's research centers on longitudinal analysis of industry and organizational evolution, with current emphasis on corporate responses to environmental sustainability challenges. His fieldwork examines organizational innovations and adaptations through global case studies, bridging business strategy with ecological imperatives. This work integrates institutional theory, strategic management, and sustainability science to analyze how firms navigate complex environmental transitions.
