William Lindman

CAPT William Lindman serves as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Marine Transportation at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), a federal service academy under the U.S. Department of Transportation. He has held this position since 2010.

His educational credentials include:

• MS in Transportation Management from SUNY Maritime College
• BS in Marine Transportation from SUNY Maritime College
• US Coast Guard Mariner's deck license (Master 1600 tons, oceans; Chief Mate unlimited tonnage)
• US Coast Guard Mariner's engineering license (Designated duty engineer 4000 horsepower)

His research examines Inland Maritime Activities and the historical interrelationships between maritime systems, political structures, military strategy, and global trade networks. He investigates how these domains have co-evolved throughout history, with particular focus on maritime communications infrastructure, seamanship practices, and maritime business operations. His interdisciplinary approach bridges practical maritime operations with historical analysis of geopolitical and economic forces shaping waterborne commerce.
