Missouri University of Science and TechnologyAbout
William H. Webb (1912–1989) was a distinguished Professor of Chemistry and the first Chair of the Department of Chemistry at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy). He served on the faculty from 1937 to 1977, except during World War II military service. His academic leadership included chairing the department from 1964 to 1976, a period marked by the separation of chemistry and chemical engineering into distinct departments and the initiation of a Ph.D. program in chemistry.
Dr. Webb held degrees from Mississippi State University (B.S., 19__), the Missouri School of Mines (M.S. in Chemical Engineering, 1939), and the University of Wisconsin (Ph.D. in Chemistry, 1949). He was honored with membership in Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Chi Sigma, Sigma Xi, and the American Chemical Society. His research focused on analytical chemistry and radiochemistry, and he retired as a lieutenant colonel from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1963.
Post-retirement, he and his wife Ruby moved to Mississippi, maintaining ties to academia through the William H. Webb Scholarship Fund. His legacy includes institutional growth, departmental reforms, and contributions to analytical chemistry education.
