William H. Sanders

William H. Sanders is the Donald Biggar Willett Professor of Engineering and Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, with a joint appointment in the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science. A triple Fellow of IEEE, ACM, and AAAS, he directs major cybersecurity initiatives including the Information Trust Institute and Coordinated Science Laboratory.

His research pioneers secure and dependable computing methodologies for critical infrastructures, specializing in security/dependability metrics and evaluation frameworks. Key contributions include developing assessment tools (METASAN, UltraSAN, Möbius) deployed across 1,900+ institutions globally, and co-founding Network Perception for commercial security solutions like NP-View. Current work focuses on smart grid resilience, anomaly detection, and electricity theft prevention in cyber-physical systems.

Sanders actively leads the Center for Resilient Electric Energy Delivery Systems (CREDC) and maintains laboratory partnerships across ITI, CSL, and industry collaborators to advance real-world deployment of trustworthy cyber infrastructure solutions.
