William Calo is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Public Health Sciences and Family and Community Medicine at Pennsylvania State University. He serves as Interim Associate Director for Community Outreach and Engagement at the Penn State Cancer Institute. His work focuses on adapting evidence-based interventions to improve cancer prevention and control among marginalized populations, particularly in rural settings. Dr. Calo holds a PhD from The University of Texas School of Public Health, an MPH from the University of Puerto Rico, and a BS from the University of Puerto Rico’s College of Natural Sciences.
Research interests include HPV vaccine uptake strategies, implementation science methodologies, and the intersection of public health law and policy. He teaches courses on health services research and developed the graduate curriculum PHS 534 Public Health Law Research and Practice. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to good health and well-being (SDG 3) and quality education (SDG 4).
Grant activities include a National Cancer Institute-funded project (2020–2025) to enhance HPV vaccination communication in rural primary care. Awards include the 2023 Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the 2021 Samuel Hinkle Junior Faculty Research Award. His research spans 99+ publications, with recent work addressing pandemic impacts on healthcare communication and innovative approaches to advance care planning in Hispanic communities.
