William Broadhead

William Broadhead is an Associate Professor of History at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he has taught since 2004. He holds the MacVicar Faculty Fellowship, MIT's highest honor for undergraduate teaching excellence, and maintains his office in E51-257.

Specializing in ancient Italy during the Roman Republic (4th-1st centuries BC), Professor Broadhead investigates Roman-Italian relations, migration patterns, colonization efforts, and ethnic military contingents. His research examines how high mobility and manpower exploitation shaped Roman hegemony, culminating in his current book project on these dynamics. He contributed significantly to the Imagines Italicae project, resulting in a 2011 three-volume publication of Italic inscriptions.

His teaching portfolio spans ancient Greek/Roman history, medieval empires, and specialized courses on Roman emperors, Athens, and Rome. He directs MIT's IAP programs in Ancient Greece and Italy, emphasizing immersive historical education.
