Will Smiley

Will Smiley is an Associate Professor in the Department of Classics, Humanities, and Italian Studies at the University of New Hampshire's College of Liberal Arts. He specializes in Middle Eastern history, Ottoman-Russian relations, and the evolution of international law, teaching across Humanities, History, and Justice Studies programs.

His research examines the intersection of law, warfare, and empire-building. Publications include the 2018 monograph From Slaves to Prisoners of War, exploring captivity norms between the Ottoman and Russian empires, and co-edited work on martial law.

Education includes a Ph.D. in Middle East Studies from Cambridge, J.D. from Yale, and prior positions at Reed College, Princeton, and NYU. His articles appear in leading journals like Law and History Review and International Journal of Middle East Studies.
