Wilbert Bitter

Wilbert Bitter is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Science, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, in the Department of Molecular Microbiology. He also holds a Professor role at VU Medisch Centrum, Amsterdam since 2010. His research focuses on microbiology, tuberculosis, and antibiotic resistance mechanisms, with contributions to understanding pathogen virulence and developing targeted antibacterial agents.

Research interests include Mycobacteria biology, secretion systems, and genomic analysis of pathogens. Recent work emphasizes antibiotic development, genomic diversity of Mycobacterium marinum, and membrane permeability dynamics.

He teaches courses on Molecular Infection Biology and Microbiology. Collaborations span global institutions, addressing UN SDGs related to health and sustainable development. Over 29 PhD theses have been supervised, though student names are not listed here.
