Wesley R. Hartmann is the John G. McCoy-Banc One Corporation Professor of Marketing at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He holds a PhD in Economics from UCLA and has been at Stanford since 2003, progressing from Assistant Professor (2003–2007) to Associate Professor (2007–2015) before becoming a full Professor. His research focuses on marketing and empirical industrial organization, with notable contributions in advertising, pricing strategies, brand building, and social interactions. He has advised over 15 PhD students, many of whom hold academic and industry positions globally. Hartmann’s work has been recognized with awards such as the Inaugural Dick Wittink Best Paper Award and multiple award nominations.
Education: PhD and MA in Economics from UCLA (2003 and 2001), BA in Economics & Political Science from UC Irvine (1996).
Research Interests: Hartmann explores advertising effectiveness, dynamic pricing, consumer behavior, and sustainability. His studies include analyzing Super Bowl ads, political advertising strategies, and the impact of automation on pricing. He co-leads the Water Conservation Collaboration Project, applying marketing principles to environmental challenges.
Awards: Finalist for Paul Green Award (2015), multiple John D. C. Little Awards, and the Oliver E. Williamson Prize. He served as Coordinating Editor for Quantitative Marketing and Economics and on editorial boards for leading journals.
Teaching: Hartmann teaches courses in marketing, empirical methods, and strategic leadership, emphasizing creativity and measurable change. His executive education programs address M&A and marketing strategy.
