About
Wendy Red Star, a MacArthur Fellow (2024), is a multidisciplinary visual artist of Apsáalooke (Crow) heritage based in Portland, Oregon. Her practice interrogates colonial narratives through archival reworkings, self-portraiture, and installations that reclaim Indigenous agency. She has exhibited globally, including at the Brooklyn Museum and Fondation Cartier, and received recognition for decolonizing art spaces.
- BFA, Montana State University (2004)
- MFA, University of California, Los Angeles (2006)
Research and Practice centers on Indigenous resilience, blending humor and critique to expose archival silences. Her Four Seasons (2006) subverts museum dioramas, while the 1880 Crow Peace Delegation Series (2014) annotates ethnographic portraits to highlight Apsáalooke symbolism. The 2021 Joslyn Art Museum installation reimagined the 1898 Indian Congress through participatory cutouts.
Scientific and Artistic Honors include the 2024 MacArthur Fellowship. Her work has been acknowledged in Native News Online, The Art Newspaper, and Oregon Public Broadcasting for challenging stereotypes in visual culture.
Academic Affiliations include visiting lecturer roles at Yale University, Banff Center, National Gallery of Victoria, and California Institute of the Arts, where she bridges Indigenous perspectives with institutional pedagogy.
